Hi everybody! It’s Sid Bardfield here with the latest news for Metairie Music Academy. Great news on the horizon! Waiting to hear back a confirmation on the recital date for June.
I want to share how important it is for moms and dads to be involved in their children’s musical journey. Hopefully, you can be at the lesson to see the learning process. Remember, how they practice is how they will perform or play. And pretty much all of these tips work for the adults too.
A couple of things that worked for me and some of my best students is to have a simple log of what they practiced that day and for how long. It takes about 10 seconds to log the date, practiced strumming, 5 min. I am still a big fan of using a timer. We all have one on our phones. For a 5 year old it might be 10 minutes a day. A more experienced, teen or adult might be 20 minutes or more.
Most students young or adult want to play the whole song start to finish a few times and that’s practice for the day. What really works and gets a fast result is to break it down into parts and repeat each part several times or until you can play it right 5 times with no mistakes. Then you can start to put 2 parts together, play that 5 times accurately and just keep adding until you have the whole song.
One of the biggest tips is for you, mom and dad, is ask your child to play for you once a week. Give them your undivided attention. Encourage them by clapping for them, saying something really encouraging no matter what it sounds like, and a big hug. Music learning is more than just playing the notes. It can be a profound experience of nurturing and loving encouragement that your child will never forget!
