Metairie Music Academy

Singing is one of funnest activities for young kids and no better way to express themselves! All the kids who are taking vocal lessons at Metairie Music Academy get specialized personal attention and encouragement. Your child will learn proper breathing and vocal control and how to sing their favorite songs with emotion.

We also place emphasis on keeping your child’s voice healthy and strong for years of great singing.

1. Training Your Voice like an Athlete Trains Their Body

The Voice which comes from your vocal cords is a muscle. We recommend lots of water. Just teach your child one word, HYDRATE! This is great for them for general health but critical for the voice.

Cheerleaders and football players and most sports. Don’t shout or scream for the team if you’re singing the next day or two. It strains your vocal cords. Whispering also has a bad effect.

When practicing sing with a lighter tone, don’t push, don’t growl or strain. Tell your child: Your voice is a gift, a treasure! Take care of it so it can shine like a star!”

2. Fun Singing Practice: It’s possible

If your child has as stuffed toys as mine then they have an audience for their singing. Let them practice in front of and sing to their favorite toys!

What is your child’s favorite songs or artist? They can sing along with Adele or with their favorite Disney movie theme.

You can buy them an inexpensive karaoke machine and put effects on their voice. When they sing they will truly feel like a star.

Think about this: Every singing superstar practices, even when they don’t feel like it. So when show time come they can shine!”

3. Motivation comes with doing

How do we teach our young kids five to twelve years old discipline? It can be done. Here’s how..
Let’s simplify practice and it has to be rewarding or they won’t do it. I think that’s what motivates any person no matter what age is whatever you’re doing has a payoff.

Parents need to set up a routine schedule daily. Try different times and see what works best. Right after school? Before bedtime? Every child is different.

Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. If they don’t want to sing then just say,” let’s sing for two minutes. Then you can stop if you want.”

Don’t give ultimatum’s or threaten if they don’t practice you’ll stop lessons. I’ve seen kids go months without real practice then all of a sudden get it. Be encouraging. Find something you like about their singing.

As they progress, let them sing for family and friends, record their singing. A small reward for a great week of practice. Maybe take them out for a treat they like.

At Metairie Music Academy, we make singing, learning how to sing super fun, interactive and confidence building each lesson.
