🎸 How to Know if Your Child is Ready to Start Guitar Lessons

At Metairie Music Academy, I hear from parents all the time:

“My child loves music… but how do I know if they’re really ready to start guitar lessons?”

It’s a great question—and one that we love answering. The truth is, there’s no perfect age or one-size-fits-all answer. But there are a few signs that can help you know if now is the right time to get your child started.

Here’s what to look for:

✅ 1. Your child plays air guitar and taps out rhythms everywhere

Does your child is play air guitar or play on a toy guitar, tapping out rhythms on the table or the back of your car seat, or do they sing along to their favorite songs—those are all great signs! Something is going on and they are wanting to express their musical curiosity with an instrument. It may be the time is now to try guitar lessons and see if they are taking to them.

✅ 2. They can focus for 20 or 30 minutes at time

We like to start children out with beginner lessons which are 30 minutes long. How do they do when they have homework or can they focus on a game for that amount of time. We need to work together to get our children do things like music rather than looking at a screen all the time.

✅ 3. They can follow simple instructions

Kids who do great in Guitar lessons can listen, enjoy trying new challenges, and practicing at home. If your child is comfortable taking direction and following a routine, they’ll be able to thrive in lessons.

✅ 4. Guitar Lessons will develop finger strength and coordination

There are great beginner finger exercises I’ve developed over the years to help young ones getting moving quickly on the guitar. If found over the years ages 6 and up tend to be a good starting point. We evaluate each child individually and can let you know!

✅ 5. They’re excited to learn

The most important ingredient? They want to learn guitar. Almost all children are nervous at first, if they say things like “I want to play like my favorite band” or “Can I learn that song?”—they’re ready!
