Will this summer be even more time for our kids to play more games and more social media? What are options that will teach them how to play music, have fun and interact with others. Here are some ideas that will hopefully change that for the summer.
Kids can start as young as 5 on guitar, have fun and really learn to play music. A Playing musical games will challenge them with how many times can they play it right gets amazing results.
The Key is to start learning songs that are easy to play
Right from the start I teach them that they don’t have to press hard and hurt their fingers. I get them using all their fingers very quickly and within one or two lessons they are going to start playing their first song. Many times it’s in the first lesson. If you’re child is under 12 years old I believe a 30 minute lesson will be best for them. If they are really doing well and liking the process a lot and they have a great attention span then the hour lesson will have them playing better, faster.
Better than mindless games and tablets this summer
There are tons of info on the benefits of guitar lessons, muisc lessons in general. Everything points to mental, emotional, socail and physical benefits. For many kids it is a relaxing, confidence building activity that just grows over time. Many parents see their kids grade improve, better concentration and focus, communication skills improve, working with a great guitar teacher and performing in recitals, which builds mutual respect and see how interacting in social settings outside your family works. I believe the best guitar teacher or music teacher is a positive role model and a mentor. Physicallly learning motor skills and improved cogintive thinking and problem solving.
How modern technology can help
Here is just a few ideas to help your child improve guitar skills. You can download for free on your phone an app called Pro Metronome. When they are ready it provides a click sound which I teach them how to play to. Most students are sent home to play to “air” and don’t develop good timing skills. Playing smoothly and evenly. But this will improve that skill. I also have them play to a drummer playing different beats to famous songs. After this it becomes very easy for them to play in a band which I’ve done my whole life. Many of my students of all ages come out and play with my band. I have a few special need students also that have played with the band.
Conclusion
Whether it’s guitar lessons, piano lessons or voice lessons, your child should be having fun and learning music skills. They should be better musicians and people after coming out of their lesson than when they went into their lesson.
