The healing power of music lessons
To say music lessons is better than medicine is a big statement. Why can I say that? First of all, the mental, physical and artisitic rewards are life changing. I see the coginitive abillities of ages 5 to 80 year olds having to think through, to work through the motor skills on guitar, pian or voice (which I consider an instrument too, that you carry with you all he time}.
I see how kids, the longer they do music lessons will getting a healthy confidence. And their teacher should always be building a genuine confidence with them. To me that should be part of the lesson. I’ve heard students, kids and adults, say things like guitar lessons are refreshing, piano is like therapy to me and many other. There is a medicianl side effect of music that it has healing properties. It has affected me personally and continues to enrich my life daily!
It’s the brain playing the guitar, piano or singing
I always say it’s the brain that is playing guitar or piano or controlling the voice. If I see a student struggling to perform a skill. I will show them how to take a smaller chunk of what they are trying to do and then it becomes easy for them. For some, 10 notes is too hard to pull off, but they can do 2 then 3 and work up to the 10. At every age there are challenges, I work with 5 year olds, I have a 73 year old and 2, 80 year old doing music lessons. And 3 Autistic students.Age is not so much a factor in doing music lessons, you just need the desire.
Music is exciting to play!
Can you imagine playing your favorite songs that you hear on the radio? Can you imagine singing a song while playing guitar or piano to accompany yourself?. It gives a real feeling of accomplishment, exhiliration and I personally am still driven to learn things that excite me when I hear them. I think the younger you start the better. Don’t wait until 80. Kids can do great in a 30 min lesson starting aroung 5.
I have several autistic kids presently and I see the differences the music lessons and the relationship with the teacher can achieve. Making music lessons fun and encouraging every student at every step!
Conclusion
Whether it’s guitar lessons, piano lessons or voice lessons, your child should be having fun and learning music skills. My feeling is they should be better musicians and better people after coming out of their lesson, than when they went into their lesson. At Metairie Music Academy my mission is to help your child learn and appreciate the beauty and the art of music.
