“Is my child too young — or too old — to start piano?” It’s the single question I get asked more than any other, whether I’m talking to a mom in Metairie, Old Metairie, Bucktown, Lakeview, Kenner, Harahan, River Ridge, Jefferson, Elmwood, or across the river in New Orleans.
After teaching thousands of private piano, guitar, voice, and bass lessons to kids over the past 15+ years, here’s the honest answer: there’s no single perfect age. But there is a sweet spot — and it’s usually earlier than parents expect.

Is 4 Too Young?
Most 4-year-olds don’t yet have the fine motor control, attention span, or letter/number recognition that piano lessons lean on. There are exceptions, but in most cases I recommend waiting just a little longer and starting with simple rhythm and listening games at home instead.
Is 5 the Ideal Age?
Five is often the sweet spot. At this age, most kids can sit for a short, playful 20-30 minute lesson, recognize letters and numbers well enough to learn note names, and are still young enough to absorb new skills like a sponge.
Is 8 Too Old to Start?
Not remotely. Eight, nine, and ten-year-olds often progress faster than younger beginners because they can read fluently, focus longer, and understand cause and effect. Older beginners frequently catch up to and pass kids who started earlier but practiced less consistently.
Is 12 Too Late?
No. Some of the most motivated students I’ve taught started at 11 or 12, right when they’re old enough to choose music lessons for themselves rather than because a parent enrolled them.
What Keyboard or Piano Should We Buy to Start?
You don’t need a full acoustic piano on day one. A basic 61-key or 76-key weighted or semi-weighted keyboard is enough to start and practice at home. I’m happy to give a specific recommendation based on your budget when we talk.
How Long Should a Beginner Practice?
For a 5 to 7-year-old, 10-15 focused minutes a day is plenty. For an 8 to 12-year-old, 15-20 minutes is a good target. Consistency matters far more than duration.
The Real Factor Isn’t Age — It’s the Teacher
I’ve taught nervous 5-year-olds who thrived and reluctant 11-year-olds who blossomed once they had a patient, encouraging teacher who adjusted to their personality instead of forcing them through a rigid curriculum.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old should my child be to start piano lessons?
Most children do well starting between ages 5 and 7, though I’ve had great success with beginners as young as 5 and as old as 12+.
Do they need their own piano at home?
No. A basic weighted keyboard is enough to start. I can recommend specific options once we talk.
How much should they practice?
10-15 minutes a day for younger beginners, 15-20 minutes for older kids — consistency matters more than length.
What if my child has ADHD or trouble focusing?
Many of my students do. Lessons are one-on-one and paced entirely to your child, which often works better than a group setting.
Can parents watch the lesson?
Absolutely — many parents, especially of younger kids, like to sit in.
Do you offer makeup lessons?
Ask about this directly when you request info — I’ll walk you through how scheduling and makeups work.
Can siblings take lessons together?
Each child gets their own private, one-on-one lesson, but siblings often take back-to-back time slots for convenience.
Can we start any time of year?
Anytime — lessons run year-round and enrollment is month-to-month.
