What makes piano easy to learn on as a beginner? The fact that you are sitting above the piano keys looking straight down at them, with an aerial view. The simple way to start is to number the fingers 1-5 and line them up on the keys and then you play by the numbers. It’s that simple. From 5 year olds to an 80 year old who never played music can play right away with this method of learning. It’s fun and it’s easy and you can play right away. Later we’ll learn to read sheet music. Play first, read later. There are different approaches to teaching piano so let me explain the traditional approach.
Do I need to read music to play piano?
Yes and no. i don’t believe it’s the most effective way to get someone playing quickly with non classical music. The traditional way piano is taught is a classical way. I think classical music is great but if that’s not what your child wants to play then why have them play classical. I believe children at some point in their musical growth should learn to read music. In the beginning you can learn the chords and rhythms and the notes just like someone learns guitar without reading any notes in the beginning. There will be piano pieces you would never play without being able to read the sheet music. Music is a language and I believe we should learn to speak it, play it, write it out and and understand it like any spoken language.
What is the most important musical goal?
I believe the most important musical goal is to play music that affects you, moves you and whoever is listening. Playing beautiful melodies in a ballad or jamming on the Blues. You hear it when you’re listening to someone play and you walk away feeling something. That’s why top musical artists get paid big bucks to perform. They make people feel their music. I believe anyone at any age can do this but to a smaller degree. I have a special needs child I taught to make beautiful melodies from a scale while I play the chords and it sounds absolutely wonderful.
The exciting world of music is waiting for you to get started!
Music should be a part of everyone’s lives. It’s transformational, it can change our feelings, change our mood. Why do couples choose a song to dance to on their wedding day? Why do we sing Happy Birthday over and over? Music is a celebration, a joy. So many of our children are solely being fed by the content of phones and tablets and computers with total junk being programmed into their minds. Just think if you or your child started music lessons now. A year from now they could play many songs that would give them a skill, a hobby, a world they can enter and experience joy.
Conclusion
Whether it’s guitar lessons, piano lessons or voice lessons, your child should be having fun and learning music skills. My feeling is they should be better musicians and better people after coming out of their lesson, than when they went into their lesson.
