Here’s the evidence
The same skills your child needs to do well in school are the same skills to play Piano. In school, most studies are using memorization. Studying piano definitely builds this skill. It’s okay to read sheet music, there’s still a lot to remember with that and in real time.
But when a student can play a piece of music from memory it really makes a difference and builds great confidence. There was a piano in a hospital and nobody was playing so my 11 year old daughter started playing and people reacted and applauded. If she didn’t remember the piece she played she would not have been able to do that. It takes a lot of attention and focus to perform music from memory.
Motor skills builds brainpower
I always say it’s the brain playing the piano, guitar or controlling the voice. If we give the right instructions to the fingers and do it enough times anyone can learn to play. It’s about putting the right finger down on the right key and you get to look right at it.
Playing piano develops finger independence so all of your fingers even the pinky is being utilized. Most kids or adults are not trying to be a concert pianist or get in competition but play songs they hear and like. I believe in training students to go slowly at first and talk themselves through the moves rather than just putting their fingers on the keys and start playing. This works really well for them!
Build your child’s confidence
Encouragement and inspiration from a teacher goes a long way. I believe when a child learns their first piece of music the teacher and parents should make a big deal out of it. Even if it’s Twinkle, twinkle little star or any song, it’s a great accomplishment.
When the child plays music in front of one other person or plays at a formal recital it boosts their confidence. I mention to parents to celebrate after a recital, maybe take them out to eat and get them their favorite dessert. They deserve it. With all the studying, pressure, bullying and all the other things kids have to deal with each day, they deserve a break from it all.
Music skills are life skills
It takes patience to learn to play any instrument. Even a few minutes a day will build the skill of learning good habits that reap rewards. Within all that it teaches discipline. I see kids using these great life skills mostly in the opposite way. They have the daily habit of picking up a phone, going to social media and spending hours looking at things that have no value whatsoever. It’s our job as parents to try to wean them off of this lifestyle. Let’s get our kids back on track with one of the greatest skills ever created, music!
